Howard County Schools Focus on the Early Years

With the start of the school year, Howard County Public Schools kicked off Launch into Learning, an initiative to get parents, county organizations, child care centers, pediatricians and others to focus learning activities on the important formative years—before kindergarten.

The first project under this new effort is “Ready Rosie,” a series of videos that show parents quick and simple activities they can do to “make every day into a learning opportunity,” says Lisa Davis, the school system’s coordinator for early childhood programs and a co-chair of the Howard County Early Childhood Advisory Council.

Parents are often told how to turn daily activities into fun learning experiences, but these videos will actually show them how do that; they will be available by subscription and can be downloaded on a phone or tablet, Davis says.

“We’re trying to start a movement. …People thought that learning belonged to the school system,” she says. “But you can’t really wait until kindergarten.”

Launch into Learning will launch their own website this month. Check it out for more parent tips and information on the new initiative.
