Though the December holidays have come and gone, there are still winter festivities for parents, children and visiting family to look forward to in January.
Baltimore’s Winter on the Waterfront series continues this month with the Inner Harbor Ice Rink, an open-air rink overlooking the harbor at 201 East Pratt St., in Baltimore City (with parking available at 101 South Calvert St.).
A favorite outdoor pastime of many, ice skating brightens up a chilly winter day by giving kids something fun to look forward to—and perhaps a new skill to learn. Skating can also serve to keep kids warm by keeping them active, and beat the winter blues that come from being stuck inside.
The rink is open noon to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with extended hours until 11 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. Sunday hours are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
The minimum age to skate is 3 years old, and children younger than 9 years old must be accompanied by an adult. On the ice, it’s recommended that children wear gloves to protect their hands from the ice and the cold. Rental skates are available in toddler size 9 through men’s size 13. There will also be skate walkers for those who are inexperienced on the ice.
Visitors who park in the South Calvert Street garage can use a discount code. For more information, visit innerharboricerink.org or facebook.com/WaterfrontPartnership.
Also a part of the Winter on the Waterfront series is the Harbor Point Winter Festival, a free family-friendly fest Jan. 25 with the unique element of live ice carving. Ice is the star of this frosty fest, which also features interactive ice sculptures, food and drink and more.
From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Harbor Point Central Plaza will transform into a winter wonderland for the occasion. More details will be released by Waterfront Partnership leading up to the event.
