The National Aquarium Launches New Sleepaway Camps
One visit to the local aquarium is never enough for hungry young minds looking to dive deeper. Now, there’s a sleepaway experience to help your junior marine biologist take their next steps.

This year, the National Aquarium is offering a series of new aquatic-themed camps to help children explore marine science and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) topics like marine biology, conservation science and local ecology.

The new Summer Explorer camp experiences range from exploring the history and headwaters of the C&O Canal to shark tagging in the waters off Ocean City. These camps are for children in grades six to 12 (and 2024 graduates), with different experiences offered for each age group.

Local Schools Expand Their Offerings
Two local schools are expanding what they have to offer Baltimore County’s young minds this fall.

The Highlands School, a K-8 independent school in Bel Air, is set to open its Little Pipers Preschool this fall. While its K-8 program is tailored to students with learning differences, the new preschool is geared toward students of all abilities.

This literary-based preschool will focus on the foundations of reading, beginning with PK4, and operate a full-day program from Monday through Friday.

The Garrison Forest School (GFS) in Owings Mills also recently announced the launch of a new center that will promote mental and emotional well-being alongside academics this fall.

The private independent girls’ school’s new Boyce Center for Learning and Thriving will combine the school’s academic resources, counseling and health center teams and serve as a resource for teachers. Additional personnel include a center director, math specialist and reading specialist.

With its new center, GFS leadership aims to create a link between academic success and mental/emotional well-being and physical health and instill soft skills like communication, public speaking, collaboration and empathy in its students.
