From the littlest family members all the way up to Mom and Dad, everyone can get behind the magic of blowing bubbles. According to The Strong National Museum of Play, it’s a pastime that goes back generations.
Paintings of children playing with bubbles appear as early as the 17th century.
Today, the tradition lives on with events such as the Baltimore Bubble Parade. Now in its eighth year, the “parade” involves people of all ages parading around Riverside Park blowing bubbles, while also enjoying a fun day of bubble-themed family entertainment.
Live music, a food truck, bubble show, photobooth, costume contest for adults, children and dogs, a mystery raffle and plenty of bubble and lawn games are among the festivities.
Presented by Uncustomary, from local performance artist and author Mary England, the Baltimore Bubble Parade is meant to generate joy and positivity—a running theme of England’s events.
Her past events include a “scarf abandonment” project where handmade or donated scarves were placed around Baltimore City to warm people experiencing homelessness, an effort which drew the attention of local and national news.
The Bubble Parade is another event based on England’s studies of psychology, positivity and fun.
“Every year, people join in on the fun and reflect on it being the perfect opportunity to slow down in a hectic world,” says England in a news release.
Last year’s bubble parade drew more than 600 participants. To learn more about this year’s event, visit uncustomary.org/BubbleParade8.
