All Maryland public schools will be closed Monday, March 16 to Friday, March 27 in an effort to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, the state’s superintendent of schools announced Thursday.

Superintendent Karen Salmon recommends that school systems use their scheduled spring breaks as makeup days for this unexpected time off.  She added that she will be meeting with county superintendents to ensure learning continues throughout the school year.

A state of emergency has been declared for the state. All sports, religious, community and other gatherings of more than 250 people are banned across the state until further notice.

The governor has activated the National Guard and elevated the Maryland Emergency Management Agency at the highest level.

The state is “entering a new phase of this crisis,” Governor Larry Hogan said at the same news conference. But he added, “All levels have been preparing for this for weeks.”
