Teaching children good manners allows them to be more confident in social situations and maintain healthy personal and professional relationships in the future.
Local parents can do this at home by setting a good example with their own behavior, but etiquette programs are also available to offer professional guidance. One such program, The International School of Protocol in Towson, is bringing a taste of its repertoire to Miss Shirely’s Café on Aug. 17.
Parents who want to explore the Towson program’s style of instruction and get a feel for what’s taught can have their child attend an etiquette class at the restaurant that day.
The International School of Protocol in Towson offers etiquette programs throughout the year for children and teens to develop their interpersonal skills and learn the hidden rules of fine dining.

Its class on Aug. 17 is for ages 7 to 15, with ages 10 and younger to attend from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. and older children from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
In it, children will learn about the history of dining in addition to etiquette rules and skills. Some of the skills taught include proper use of utensils, entering and exiting from a chair, respectful conversation topics and general table manners.
The menu will include a beverage, first course and second course. Parents, guardians and other family members can dine in a separate room with a 15% discount while the children attend the class.
