Meet July’s Cover Kid!

We caught up with cover kid Logan, age 2 ½ , just before he and his family moved to the Washington, D.C. area. Logan’s mom, Deana Around Him, relocated to Baltimore in 2008 to complete a Ph.D in public health at Johns Hopkins University. She is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the National Congress of American Indians Policy Research Center and will transition into a permanent position there this summer.

“I work on projects that aim to build American Indian and Alaska Native research capacity and strengthen research policies in a way that supports tribal sovereignty. I also do maternal and child health research,” Deana says.

Logan’s dad, John Around Him, recently started a job at the National Indian Education Association, where he will provide curriculum and content options for American Indian and Alaska Native schools.

The family enjoyed living in southeast Baltimore and taking walks through its many neighborhoods. “We also loved meeting up with local and out-of-town friends at all of the quirky festivals and events we find in the area, like the Kinetic Sculpture Race and Privateer Days,” Deana says.

Among Logan’s top likes: toy cars and the ducks at the pond where photographer David Stuck shot the cover pose. As any parent knows, it’s not always easy to photograph a preschooler. Deana held Logan on her hip and then leaned out of the photo while Jennifer Perkins-Frantz, BC’s art director and a mom herself, kept the tiny model smiling.

I wanted to say “Thank You” for this information so that I have some place to take my grands when they visit. Is it possible to get it by mail? If not, where else can I get it?

  2. This is my Grandson Logan Around Him! How can I get a copy of this magazine? I live in Kansas.
