Kids with big ideas and bright minds can try their hands at making the world a better place with United Way of Central Maryland’s Changemaker Challenge. This challenge makes social innovation a competition and serves to highlight and award ideas that address local, community challenges.

The challenge will award more than $600,000 in grants across Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford and Howard Counties as well as Baltimore City.

Registration for the challenge is open, and individuals and nonprofits can submit applications through Feb. 20. Finalists will be notified by March 26.

Finalists will receive a $1,500 stipend, coaching and pitch support. Live pitches will take place in late April and early May. Grantees can be awarded up to $25,000 and will receive credit to create a brand video in addition to access to The Lonely Entrepreneur, an online learning community.

Past participants have appreciated the challenge for the motivation it gave them to get started on a big idea.

“Before [the Changemaker Challenge], I wasn’t able to do [the work]. I just talked about it,” says Alex Smith, a 2021 Changemaker Challenge winner, in a news release.
