In advance of the Chesapeake Family Life Camp Fair, which will be held on Saturday, Jan. 31 from noon-3 p.m. at the Annapolis Mall, Baltimore’s Child and Chesapeake Family Life editor Lindsay VanAsdalan appeared on news network WBAL-TV 11 to discuss how parents can prepare for summer camp early.

VanAsdalan was interviewed by news anchor and reporter Jenyne Donaldson, who echoed the sentiment that the beginning of the year is the best time for parents to think about signing their children up for a summer camp.

“A lot of camps already opened up registration, some as early as December and a lot in January,” VanAsdalan explained. “There will definitely be a lot more coming in February.”

The amount of camp options available can be overwhelming for any parent dipping their toe into the world of summer camps for the first time, with options ranging from overnight camps with a wide range of activities to day camps specializing in subjects like the arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

“One of the best things to do, as simple as it sounds, is to start with your child’s interests,” VanAsdalan noted. “There’s going to be something that they’re excited about, something that they most want to do in the summer. You can probably eliminate certain options right off the bat based on what they’re comfortable with.”

But factors that are more relevant to the parent should be considered as well, such as distance from the home, cost and accommodations available for children who need them.

This weekend’s camp fair will take place outside of Discoveries: The Library at the Mall at the Annapolis Mall and will feature representatives from several Chesapeake-area camps. A second camp fair, which will focus more on Greater Baltimore camps, is set for Saturday. Feb. 7 at Towson Town Center. Both events feature camps that are accessible to parents in both areas.
