After painting the (Sand)town last year, Art @ Work, the summer mural artists apprenticeship program, has set its artist’s eye on Upton. The five-week program started last week and features eight teams of young artist apprentices, a lead professional artist and artist intern, who will be unveiling their mural ideas to the community 6-9 p.m. tomorrow at the Shake & Bake Family Fun Center.

The public art projects this year will span along the Pennsylvania Avenue cultural corridor, including places like the aforementioned Shake & Bake Family Fun Center, The Avenue Market, Sissy’s Seafood, Eutaw Marshburn Elementary School and Crazy Beauty Mart, among others. They’ll be at it throughout July, so if you see students painting the walls outside in Upton, stop by to take in the awesome art.

Just in its second year, Art @ Work employs dozens of young people from the local neighborhoods. A program that helps both future artists and gives back to the community? Count us in! If you want to hear the designs that will soon be gracing Upton walls, be sure to stop by the presentation tomorrow evening. To learn more about Art @ Work, go here.
